Clara Barton was always a caregiver. She was extremely generous, often working for free. During the American Civil War she was a nurse that traveled with the army, serving alongside the soldiers. Later in life she traveled to Europe, and while she was in Switzerland she learned about the Red Cross. She volunteered with the Red Cross during the Franco-Prussian War. After returning home she established the American Red Cross and was its first president.
